Fall assistantships are usually granted for an academic year of two semesters. Spring and Summer assistantships may be granted by semester, depending on the availability of funds.

The Department nominates a limited number of outstanding applicants for Graduate School Assistantships and Supplements. Final selections for those awards are based on a University-wide competition. Nominees for a Graduate School Award must first be admitted to the Geography Graduate Program. Applicants who believe they possess the credentials to compete for this award should see to it that this application, as well as all other application materials required by the department are received by the Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Geography no later than January 1.
