Top 5 Things to Do to Make Your Geography Lab Computing Experience the Best

1. Reboot, reboot, reboot - both the computer and the printer if and when not working correctly

2. Check printer if job does not print before resending job. Most common problem is that it is out of paper. Second most common problem is paper jam or out of toner. Third is the printer queue is not cleared.

3. Check disk space on your H: drive which is a network drive on the departmental server. 200MB is the starting quota but can be expanded by asking. If you overshoot your quota, the network drive often prevents any additional saving of data even if you have deleted files and you are below quota. CurrentClassData folder does not count against your quota. This folder can not be deleted.

4. Data protection - do not save data on C: drive and remember to logoff when leaving the lab. Computers are periodically redone (reghosted) which wipes out the C: drive. Some computers e.g. lab 321 have extra drive space such as a local F: drive. It is OK to save data and work from the F: drive. Sometimes beneficial to work from a local drive. Make sure that you copy any personal files from F: to H: drive when you are finished. No files are protected on F: drive.

5. More Data Protection - backup data often. When working save file periodically. Word for instance, does a backup every 10 minutes but many programs do not. Backup data to CDs, DVDs, zip drive. Lab 313 has DVD writers (Sonic software) and writeable DVDs are available from system support. All labs have CD writers (Roxio software) and there are 3 computers in Lab 321 with zip drives. The H: drives are incrementally backed up once a day and completely each month.

Helpful Information & "Gotchas"

1. Class schedules on lab doors

2. Re-issuing of UGA card requires re-registration for Geography Labs. Web submission is not automatic.

3. Licensing of software is complex. Some are site licensed (www.uga.edu/sitesoft) some are purchased per machine. Each lab varies a bit - see software lists for lab.

4. Problem reports and suggestions are welcome

5. Reservation calendar on Geography web for equipment checkout and lab reservation (www.ggy.uga.edu/DeptOnly). B27 is special case, though.

6. Webmail (ugamail.uga.edu) has the option of setting a vacation feature - options, automatic reply. Junk mail folder needs to be checked - Folders, Junk Mail

7. There is a wireless network in the Geography building. Loading up a browser, e.g IE or Firebird , will take you to the PAWS network where you login with your MyID.

8. Lab 313. 153, B27 have USB slots on the front. Lab 313 & multimedia classrooms have power save feature just like notebooks computers. If power button is flashing, it is on power save. Press button to bring computer back to life.

9. You can ftp (file transfer) from your home computer to pangaea (pangaea.ggy.uga.edu). Secure ftp clients are available from uga sitesoft.

10. Make sure that the GGYDOMAIN is chosen on the lab login and not This computer

11. When changing password via Ctrl-Alt-Delete, the password message sounds like an error but it really does change your password

12. Don't confuse Geography Lab login with MyID login.

5 Top Do's and Don'ts

1. No personal printing on lab computers

2. No installation of software especially from web

3. No soft drinks, water is OK in labs

4. Fill out problem report when a reboot does not fix a problem.

5. Let systems folks know when there is a problem in the lab:
kblane@uga.edu, rphares@uga.edu (web designer). We fix hardware/network/software problems but do not know intricate details of software functions - ask T.A. for that info.
