Grad Student Orientation
(No food or drink in labs. Water's okay!)
Login using your MyID & password. Make sure that 'LABS' is chosen on the third line of the login and not 'This computer' If third line is not showing, choose 'Options'.
Rebooting is the first step in correcting a computer problem!
H: drive is a network drive for personal data storage. H: drive disk quota is 500MB but can be increased by emailing to systems administrator. Can check current disk usage by accessing My Computer and clicking on the H: drive.
H: drives are available from any geography lab computer 153, 321, 313, 119
Make sure to Logoff when your session in finished. Otherwise your H; drive will be available to the next person if they sit at the computer in the next 10 minutes. Otherwise, the computer will lock and the next person will not be able to use it unless the power button is held down until the computer shuts off.
H: drive access is possible from home if needed. Uses VPN client (as do wireless computers) and grad students currently don't have VPN access.
I: drive is read-only for students and is for instructor class data.
Do not save to the c: drive or to your desktop. Save to H: drive or a flash drive or external drive. Some computers such as lab321 have an extra local drive partition, i.e. d: where you can save data. However, it will only be available from that computer.
When logging in to a computer for the first time, your profile is created. Profiles created on individual computers may vary between computers.
Backup your data on drive H: Most computers have DVD/CD writers. Flash drives are a good choice as well as external hard drives.
You will be added to the geography graduate student listserv. To email all the grad students, place on the To: line of your email, ggygrd-l@listserv.uga.edu Please be respectful and use common sense when posting to the listserv. The other listservs are ggyugrd-l@listserv.uga.edu (undergrads), ggystf-l@listserv.uga.edu (staff), ggyprf-l@listserv.uga.edu (professors)
Do not install software on lab computers. Notify system administrator if a program is needed. UGA licensing is complicated. The UGA website, sitesoft.uga.edu has free software available for download.
On-line reservation calendar for checking out equipment. Some laptops are labeled as long-term check out, otherwise they are available for 2 week checkouts. TA's can sign up for labs. B27 is also available for large labs.
If you are a TA for a lab class, for the best job possible, you should check the software program on the computer and work through the exercise before your lab period. Many times there is a glitch or something not working properly.
The same goes when teaching in one of the multimedia classrooms. Make sure that you understand the system and how to use it before you teach i.e. cable TV, using the DVD player etc. 200B and 200C have the same system and 200D and 300A have a similar system – the latter are not as high tech as 200B and 200C
Lab schedules on doors. Please check before entering lab.
Problem reports. Please let system's administrator know if a computer needs repair.
Printers are the largest cause of problems in the lab.
Make sure the Black & White printer is your default printer.
Sometimes the printers need a reboot (turn off and on). Sometimes they are out of paper or there is a paper jam. Sometimes the toner is out or there is print job stuck in the queue.
The Black & White Laser printers in Lab 321 & 313 are duplex. They will print front and back. Accessed through printer properties e.g. the Finishing tab.
Print color sparingly. Lab printers are NOT for personal use, only class projects.
