GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SCIENCE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
For Undergraduate Students
Contact Person: Dr. Thomas W. Hodler twhodler@uga.edu (706) 542-6913
The Geographic Information Science Certificate Program is designed to prepare undergraduates with the basic training necessary to enter the rapidly expanding field of geographic information science (GIS). There are three components to the curriculum: a set of prerequisite courses to gain entry to the program, a set of core courses required of all students enrolled in the certificate program, and a set of elective courses that permit exploration of more advanced themes in GIS and/or development of individual research projects or internships in GIS.
Prerequisites:
Prerequisite preparation in four general areas is considered essential background for participation in the Geographic Information Science Certificate Program.
- Competence in mathematics through elementary calculus: MATH 2200-2200L or equivalent.
- Competence in elementary computer programming: CSCI 1301-1301L, ENGR 1140, or equivalent.
- Competence in elementary statistics: GEOG 2300, STAT 2000, ENGR 1140, or equivalent.
- Competence in cartography (mapping): GEOG 3510-3510L, or equivalent.
Core Courses (9 Hours):
Three core courses form the essential background for understanding the structure and conceptual framework of geographic information science. It is not necessary to take these courses in sequence.
- GEOG 4370-4370L Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
- GEOG 4330-4330L The Use and Interpretation of Aerial Photographs
- GEOG 4410-4410L Cartographic Visualization Methods
Elective Courses (Choose Two -- 6-7 hours)
In addition to the core courses, students enrolled in the GIS certificate program will take an additional 6-7 hours of elective courses, selected from among the following options:
Two courses from 1-5:
- GEOG 4350-4350L Remote Sensing of Environment
- GEOG/CRSS 4375 GIS Applications in Agriculture
- GEOG 4380-4380L Transportation Modeling and GIS
- GEOG 4430-4430L Advanced Photogrammetry
- GEOG 4470-4470L Geographic Analysis and Geographic Information Systems
OR
- One of 1-5 and one of the following:
GEOG 3990 Internship in Geography (GIS focus)
GEOG 4920 Special Problems in Area Analysis
ENGR 4920 Engineering Design Project
Additional Stipulations
In order to ensure that certificate recipients display a strong command of geographic information science, the certificate is granted only to those students who achieve a 3.0 GPA in the five core and elective courses that constitute the Geographic Information Science Certificate Program. The GPA for certificate purposes will be computed in accordance with UGA policy. Repeated courses will be averaged to determine the final GPA.
The GIS certificate will be awarded only in conjunction with completion of baccalaureate requirements in one of the academic units at UGA. Post-baccalaureate students returning to acquire the certificate must repeat any required or elective courses which were completed more than five years prior to the award date of the certificate.
